Renewing your Nepali passport abroad: fees, steps and what the new e-passport system means
Nepal switched to a new e-passport system in mid-July 2026. Here is how renewal works at embassies, the official fees by region, and why you should apply early.
Your passport is the single most important document you carry abroad. Let it expire and everything from your visa to your next flight home gets complicated. Here is how to renew it without stress.
A new system, so expect some delays
In mid-July 2026, Nepal launched a new e-passport system at the Department of Passports, some district offices and missions abroad. Officials expected a settling-in period of about three months. Our advice: apply at least four to six months before your passport expires.
The basic steps
- Fill in the online application form at online.nepalpassport.gov.np (or the link your embassy gives you).
- Book an appointment with your embassy. Most missions only accept walk-ins for emergencies.
- Go in person with your current passport, a photocopy and your citizenship certificate. Your photo and fingerprints are taken at the embassy.
- Pay the fee and keep the receipt safe until you collect your new passport.
Official fees at missions abroad
These are the e-passport fees set for missions. Always confirm the current amount with your embassy before you go.
- Gulf countries and Malaysia (including UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman): $50 for 34 pages, $100 for 66 pages
- USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong: $150 for 34 pages, $200 for 66 pages
- Most European countries: €120 for 34 pages, €170 for 66 pages
- Other Asian and African countries: $80 for 34 pages, $130 for 66 pages
Example: Malaysia
The embassy in Kuala Lumpur charges RM 240 (34 pages), RM 480 (66 pages), RM 360 for a lost or damaged passport, and RM 120 for children under 10, paid in cash. It says processing takes 45 to 60 days.
Example: UAE
The embassy in Abu Dhabi handles consular work Monday to Friday, 9 am to 2 pm. For passport questions it has a text-only WhatsApp line: +971 50 166 4023. The main phone line is +971 2 634 4767.
One more tip
Never hand your passport to an agent or employer to “renew it for you”. Apply yourself, in person, and keep your passport in your own hands.
