Undocumented in Malaysia? The repatriation programme now runs until 31 May 2027
Malaysia's Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 lets undocumented workers go home after paying a compound fine. With raids continuing, this is the time to act.
Some Nepali workers in Malaysia have overstayed their visas or lost their documents, often through no fault of their own. If that is you, there is still a legal way home, but the window will not stay open forever.
The programme
Malaysia’s Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 (PRM 2.0) has been extended to 31 May 2027. It lets undocumented foreign workers leave the country legally by paying a compound fine instead of facing arrest and detention.
According to reports in The Edge Malaysia, the costs are:
- RM 500 for overstaying or illegal entry
- RM 300 for misusing a pass
- plus a RM 20 special pass fee
Why act now
Enforcement is real. In mid-September, raids in Kuala Lumpur detained 472 undocumented workers, including eight Nepalis. Being caught can mean detention, a longer and more expensive process, and a ban on returning to Malaysia.
What to do
- Contact the Embassy of Nepal in Kuala Lumpur first. It can help with travel documents if your passport has been lost or kept by an employer.
- Register for PRM 2.0 through the official Malaysian immigration channels. Do not pay agents who promise to “fix” your status.
- Keep copies of your passport, ticket and payment receipts.
- When you are back in Nepal, you can lodge a complaint online at ujuri.dofe.gov.np if a recruitment agency misled you.
Looking ahead
Malaysia has also announced a new multi-tier levy system for employers of foreign workers, but no start date or rates have been confirmed yet. We will post updates on Nepal Live.
