- Bagmati Province, Bhaktapur
- Best time to visit
- October to March for the clearest Himalayan views
- Getting there
- About 32 km from Kathmandu, roughly an hour or two by road depending on traffic.
You do not need a long trek to see the Himalaya. At about 2,175 metres on the eastern rim of Kathmandu Valley, Nagarkot is famous for its sunrise.
The view
On a clear morning, you can see eight of Nepal’s thirteen Himalayan ranges from here, including Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang and the Everest range. On the very best days, Everest itself shows up on the horizon.
What to do
- Stay overnight and be at a viewpoint before dawn.
- Walk the forest trails down towards Changu Narayan, one of Kathmandu Valley’s seven World Heritage monument zones.
- Combine Nagarkot with a day in Bhaktapur.
Our tip
Check the weather the night before. Mist can hide everything, so if the forecast is clear, go. If not, sleep in and try again.
